Nanaimo Council Approves R5 Rezoning for Increased Property Density

The Nanaimo City Council is set to re-zone approximately 25,000 properties to comply with new provincial legislation mandating higher density. This significant shift introduces three new residential designations, impacting the development landscape. The primary change involves the R5 zoning, allowing three to five units per lot. Exceptions include the Old City Quarter and corridor routes, which have specific zoning rules. While the changes are expected to be gradual, they mark the most substantial adjustment in local land use in decades. The council will review the bylaws in late May, aiming for adoption by mid-June.
